Did you know that you can embroider paper nearly as easily as cloth?
Yep, all you need to do is follow these simple steps to make a handmade, heartfelt card like this one pictured below.
1. Buy the cheap, blank, $1 set of 8 cards at Michael's. Or, be fancy. I would recommend using a heavy cardstock, and something inexpensive while you get the hang of this.
2. Think creatively, but keep it simple. You don't want to worry about lots of curves and complicated designs for your design. All I did for the embroidered flowers above was lightly draw in pencil a horizontal line for where I wanted their stems to end, and a few vertical lines for their stems.
3. Get a big (small gauge) needle and carefully punch an evenly-spaced even number of holes, taking care not to make them too close to avoid any ripping.
4. Get your embroidery thread and go to town! If you are using buttons, like in the craft pictured above, I would recommend starting at the end farthest away from the button (here, the bottom of the stem). This ensures that if you accidentally counted the number of holes incorrectly, or if they are not spaced just right, you can cover any mistakes with the actual button.
Note: Yes, inside flap of your card will look like the back of the embroidery. Either 1) embrace it--people will be floored that you took the time to do this at all, and if they are important to you, they won't care about a few threads ;), or 2) use some extra cardstock to layer over the offending threads.
